Trip #2: Yellowknife

After 3 years, we finally made it!

We flew out on Saturday, July 30. When we arrived, we checked into our hotel then went to A&W. After a break, we went to the grocery store. We walked to Great Slave Lake and then had supper at the hotel.

Sunday morning, we walked down to Old Town. On the way, we climbed a rocky hill. The Old Town Ramble and Ride was on, and we spent some time viewing the artwork for sale. We found the Old Town Glassworks, watched part of a show, and went to the Sundog, where some of the group bought ice cream.

When we were tired, we walked back to the hotel. We bought subs for supper and went to the park by city hall, where we saw Elon Muskox and ate by the water.

Monday morning we did a city tour and went to the museum. After the tour, we stopped for lunch at Yellowknife River territorial park, then went to Cameron Falls. Cameron Falls was a hit – even if it was really uphill both ways!

On Tuesday we went to the legislature for a tour, then we went to the grocery store before breaking up into small groups to go thrifting and souvenir shopping. We finished the day by buying supper at food trucks at the farmer’s market at city hall.

Wednesday started by visiting the Diamond Centre to learn about the diamond industry in the Northwest Territories, then we got on the bus again to go see the bison. We had lunch at North Arm Territorial Park, then spent the afternoon spotting bison.

Thursday we did some glass etching with Old Town Glassworks, went on a boat tour of the houseboats, and then stopped at the Wildcat Cafe for supper.

Friday was our last full day in Yellowknife, and we went to an indigenous camp with B.Dene Adventures. We made fish scale art, cleaned fish and ducks, and participated in a feed the fire ceremony. After supper at Coyote’s, most of trip participants went to a drag show for Yellowknife Pride.

We spent Saturday in Fred Henne park with the Yellowknife Guides and Pathfinders. We cooked hot dogs on the fire, played some games, and presented Canada Cords to two Pathfinders who finished them on the trip. Then we headed to the airport to come home.
